Cornerstone to Renew Gladys Wood Elementary School

January 4, 2016

Cornerstone was selected by the Anchorage School District as Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) for the design and construction of a renewed Gladys Wood Elementary School, a 50,000 SF school serving about 375 students. Work includes demolition, renovation, and new construction to address the unique features of the site and building, as finalized in cooperation with a design team led by McCool Carlson Green. School will remain operational throughout construction, which is scheduled for completion in August 2017.

The proposed plan increases the building size by approximately 8,200 SF. Site work includes parking lot and playground accessibility improvements. Code and safety concerns will be addressed site and building wide. The main entry of the school will be relocated and will have an addition to provide a secure vestibule and administration reorganization according to ASD Educational Specifications.

Thermal envelope upgrades include exterior walls and windows, seismic performance of the building structure to bring it up to code, and ADA upgrades throughout the building. Renovations include replacement of mechanical, electrical, and system controls. The project adds space to classrooms, the art room, administration, and storage, and removes operable walls and enclosed classrooms.
