Cornerstone Celebrates New Kodiak Public Library

Cornerstone celebrated the completion of the new Kodiak Public Library, along with several hundred Kodiak residents, at the grand opening hosted by the City on December 9, 2013. The event featured guest speakers including Kodiak Mayor Pat Branson, Rasmuson Foundation CEO Diane Kaplan, and Kodiak Public Library Association Treasurer Erin Harrington. The Rasmuson Foundation, State of Alaska, City of Kodiak, and numerous private donors all contributed to the $12.4M project.

“The excitement for the new library is huge,” said Cornerstone Vice President Mark Palmatier. “This was a great project for our team and it’s awesome to see so much enthusiasm from the community,” he added.

Cornerstone’s Superintendent Carl Brinkerhoff was on hand to explain the unique features of the 16,000 SF building, which include multiple study rooms, public meeting spaces, a dedicated Children’s Room, and a brightly lit main hall with columns framed in Sitka spruce logs harvested from the site.

“Working in Kodiak was a great experience,” said Brinkerhoff. “Our core team of local carpenters and laborers did an amazing job. People here should be very proud of their work,” he added.

Cornerstone began construction in June 2012 and completed the building in October 2013.
